FRIDAY FILM AND FISH & CHIP SHOW !
'GENEVIEVE' (1953) Friday 25th October, 2013
KAY KENDAL, KENNETH MORE, DINAH SHERIDAN, JOHN GREGSON
This Friday was an opportunity to watch my latest film acquisition, an original IB Technicolor print of 'Genevieve.' This is my second print of this title. The first print was on non-fade Kodachrome colour with grey-track optical sound. I thought that the shadows were too dense on this Kodachrome print and lacked detail. This is an attribute of Kodachrome as it was not intended as a duplicating stock and no amount of light passed through the film emulsion will improve shadow detail that is not there
I was very pleased with the IB Technicolor print when viewing, although it made me realise just how good my old Kodachrome print was.
More details and actual frame scans to follow
The film main titles start in silence and then Larry Adler's memorable
harmonica musical score begins. "Kenneth More plays an advertising agent who
rides an ancient barrel-bonneted Dutch Spyker in the London to Brighton
Veteran Car Rally. His intentions where women are concerned are far
from honourable. He believes in taking a different girl with him on
every week-end trip. On this occasion his companion is a model, played
by Kay Kendal. Ambrose also has a friend, a young barrister played by
John Gregson, who goes to Brighton with his wife Dinah Sheridan in
"Genevieve," a 12 horsepower Darracq made in Paris in 1904. All four
get to Brighton, but quarrel, the outcome being a £100 bet as to
which of them can drive back to Westminster Bridge first. John Gregson
drove for the film from London to Brighton and back without a full
driving licence. He took lessons, but there wasn't time to pass his
test before filming began. In all, he did about 100 miles at the wheel,
with the police turning a blind eye. "
